Shimba Hills National Reserve

The Shimba Hills National Reserve is a 193 sq km nature reserve thirty kilometers southwest of the port city of Mombasa. Only about a 45-minute drive from Diani Beach, this natural gem, established in 1968, is ideal for a day trip or a relaxing trip with an overnight stay at the tree hotel Shimba Hills Lodge!

This special rainforest area has a warm, humid tropical coastal climate with 1200 mm annual rainfall.

The hilly landscape of the Shimba Hills rises to a height of 450 m, characterized by mountain forests alternating with open, lush green meadows. The green hills of Africa!

Rare forest elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, forest pigs, waterbucks, various species of monkeys and leopards live here, but you have to look for them because of the dense vegetation.

The nature reserve is famous for its extremely rare East African sable antelope. These animals are probably some of the most beautiful antelopes in Africa. If you want to admire this endangered species, you only have this opportunity in Kenya in the Shimba Hills.

An impressive world of birds inspires every ornithologist. We always enjoy watching a pair of local spotted eagles at the Shimba Hills Lodge. There the beautiful birds of prey regularly fly over the waterhole to hunt fish or sit in the tree and let out their impressive African call. Fantastic!

Another great experience in the park is the walk accompanied by rangers to Sheldrick Waterfall. Here there is an idyllic place hidden in the lush green nature.

An often undiscovered treasure of Kenya, the Shimba Hills!
